The skin is waterproof and possesses a unique fatty substance that enables it to do this. The outer layer of the epidermis (top layer of skin) also has an effective water holding capacity and this contributes to its elasticity and serves to maintain the body balance of fluid and electrolytes. If the water level drops below a certain level, the skin becomes cracked, reducing its efficiency as a barrier.
