Skin Functions - Respiration

temperature regulation | back to overview | sensory perception

The skin actually breaths and is responsible for ridding the body of a great amount of toxic material. If the skin is covered by a non-permeable membrane (like a plastic bag) it would not be long before the person would begin to feel unwell. This always leads to the consideration of types of clothing we wear. Some clothes, usually natural fibres, allow the skin to breath, where man made fibres clearly do not. This may account for why some clothes feel very comforting to wear, as the skin is allowed to breath and the waste production of the body shed from the surface of the skin. Sounds like a comforting thought.
