What is Shiatsu?

previous page | contents | next page

Shiatsu is a form of dry massage. By this it is meant that no oils are used, and often applied through the clothes. Shiatsu is used to treat a variety of conditions ranging from musculo-skeletal problems eg- joint pain / stiffness  to systemic problems like diabetes or high blood pressure. People use Shiatsu for a variety of problems and also to just feel better in themselves, as it is a great de-stressing treatment, stress being known as the modern disease.

People liken Shiatsu to Acupuncture. Although this can be said to be true in some of the theory and the location of the channels including some of the points used. However they can be very different in their results and application. The focus of Acupuncture and what it can do is quite specific, which is not to say that Shiatsu is non-specific. However to quote Shiatsu to be the same as Acupuncture ‘without the needles’ is entirely incorrect.
