The lower back is centrally comprised of the Lumbar part of the spine. It contains 5 bones (vertebrae). The lowest Lumbar Vertebrae sits on top of a triangular piece of bone (the Sacrum), which attaches at either side to the Pelvis. The spinal cord runs within this area of the spine, the Nerves associated with this region help in supplying organs such as those related to the digestive and Kidney regions. This area also has Nerves which supply the lower limbs, Hips and Pelvis. There are Muscles which relate just to the lower back and there are others which travel from the neck and mid back into the lower back. There are ligaments local to the joints.
Lower back pain, stiffness, sharp pains, a deep nagging discomfort. Sometimes made worse when standing, can cause difficulty in getting comfortable when sleeping. Certain directions in movement can sometimes make the pain worse, even when sitting, some injuries will cause a person to shuffle around trying to find relief from the discomfort. If the nerves are affected in this region it is common to experience pins and needles, numbness and shooting pains; which can affect the Hips, Pelvis, Thigh Calf and Foot. If of a certain degree it could create a weakness in the legs causing a feeling of giving way. Due to the close association in structure between the lower back and the hip regions, it is not uncommon for one to affect the other. Picking up heavy objects, poor lifting techniques and poor posture, can often cause injuries to this region. Whiplash injuries have been known to often affect the region as well as the neck.
