The hands and fingers are comprised of a connection of small thin bones (the Metacarpals and Phalanges), each connection forms a joint. There is a surrounding network of Muscles and Tendons. Some local to the hand, others from the elbow and forearm. There are a lot of Ligaments holding the joints together. The nerve supply to the hand and fingers comes from the neck. The hands and fingers are formed to enable a multitude of functions ranging from strength and grip functions, to intricate hand eye co-ordinated movements. If impaired it can be surprising how much ones life can be affected.
Local pain in the hands often associated with movement. Tightness within the hand accompanied by a loss of range of movement is not uncommon. Sometimes swelling around the joints is noticed and the joints themselves can become distorted in shape. This then generally effects the hands use strength and capabilities. Some of these symptoms are particularly complained of in later life. Pins and needles, numbness can often occur in the hand. This is usually from a neck or wrist condition.
