The Ankle Joint

The ankle joint is made up of the lower end of the two shin bone’s (the Tibia and Fibula) in the leg, from above and the upper part of a bone in the ankle(the Talus) which sits upon your heel bone (the Calcaneum). The muscles and tendons from the calf pass down into and across the ankle joint, there is a complex set of ligaments surrounding the joint particularly on the inner and outer sides. This enables movement and help in controlling standing, posture, walking, running and jumping. The nerve supply to the ankle comes from the lower back.

Common complaints:

The ankle can be affected from injuries to the associated muscles, tendons and local ligaments. It is common for the ankle to become swollen, stiff and difficult to weight bear. The range of its movement can be affected. Due to its position in relation to weight bearing it can often be difficult to stand up after sitting or first thing in the morning. Walking, running can obviously then become affected; or just simply trying to stand in one position for any length of time. It is common for ankle pain to be accompanied with foot or calf discomfort due to their obvious structural relationship.
