Depressive Illness

Depressive illness is defined as a combination of misery and a feeling of being unwell, which occurs either spontaneously, or exceeds in duration and intensity the normal reaction to any provocative disaster or misfortune.

Depressive illness manifests itself in the three areas of reaction:

  • In mood
  • In the response of the client to physical and intellectual stimulation
  • In the functioning of the autonomic nervous system.

The clients mood can be characterised by:

  • Dejection
  • Unhappiness
  • Withdrawal of interests from the outside world.
  • General retardation of mental an physical activity
  • Indecision
  • Other subjective difficulty in thinking.
