Supportive therapy can include direct, simple and sympathetic advice and sheer reassurance and encouragement. The aim being constructive modification by personal contact with family or employer, a trained psychiatric social worker can work in conjunction with the therapist. The foundation for supportive psychotherapy is a comprehensive history, thus making it possible for the therapist to gain an understanding of the client in some ways more objectively and comprehending than ever gained by a person before, including the client himself.
