Ideas Of Reference

previous page | contents | next page

Ideas of reference involve disturbance of judgement and interpretation of reality, whereby the client tends to relate external circumstances to himself and so comes to believe that almost everything that happens has some special meaning directed towards himself. This leads to delusions in explanation of the otherwise incomprehensible picture of the world, which the client has developed.

Definitions of:

  • Delusions; a false or mistaken belief, which for the client has the force of conviction and is firmly held, despite all evidence to the contrary.
  • Hallucinations; are perceive through one of the senses and do not correspond to any stimulus in the outside world.
  • Illusions: Simple perceptions, which although produced by an external stimulus are misinterpreted by the client in purely subjective terms.
