How do Chinese Herbal Medicines work?

previous page | contents | next page

Chinese Herbal Medicines work by potentiating each other. This means that one herb can enhance the other and give a stronger effect, when needed. The specific combinations of various herbs has been developed over thousands of years by the diligent practice of Herbalists in times gone by.

This amplification of a herb by another means that herbs in CHM are rarely used on their own, they are nearly always used in a formula. A formula is the combination of herbs to produce a specific effect. Formula can also be adjusted to suit the person to enhance the effect of the herbs. What is meant by adjustment is that the dosage of specific herbs within the formula can be increased or decreased to be more specific to the patients needs, or a herb not normally contained within the formula can be added to enhance the formulas action. Obviously if the patient decides to opt for the pill form of medicine (patent medicine) then these adjustments can not be made.
