Your health is your future...
This is characterised initially by an eruption of very itchy vesicles (a small fluid filled swelling) on the sides of the fingers and palms of the hands and occasionally the soles of the feet and toes.
80% of cases involve the hands only. In severe attacks the Eczema can spread to the back of the hands. Rarely it progresses further than these areas.
Most often seen in the 20-40 year age group, and is slightly more common in females. The first attack is frequently triggered by hot weather, appearing in late spring or summer. Sometime the first attack can follow an intense emotional upset.
Commonly associated with frequent hand washing, or the use of detergents or other chemicals without proper protection. This Eczema can effect the nail beds and lead to distorted nail growth, pitting and discolouration. After the vesicular (small fluid filled sacs) stage the skin become dry, scaled and fissured (cracked). The cyclical nature of the disease can be a notable feature.
Traditional Chinese names for this include "Ants nest" and "River snail vesicle".
After the successful treatment of the condition with Chinese Herbal Medicine it is very important to follow specific hand care instructions for a further 4-6 months after the hands have healed.
